In the in-person classroom, our student-to-instructor ratio is typically 12:1, ensuring an interactive environment where everyone can ask questions. During behind-the-wheel drives, the ratio is typically 1:1, allowing for 100% focused, personalized coaching. For the 1-hour observation requirement, we typically maintain a 2:1 ratio — one student drives while the second observes from the back seat. Students learn immensely by watching their peers navigate traffic, and it provides a supportive, low-pressure environment before they swap seats.
You can book driving lessons online based on the availability of the instructors.
The DOL requires 6 behind-the-wheel sessions that can be either one-on-one or with other students. The DOL also requires 1 observation session, where you'll be with other students.

Yes, for a fee and based on availability.
You can reschedule your test after 24 hours. In the Teen Driving program you have 2 free attempts, and $30 for each attempt thereafter.
Please arrive 5–10 minutes before the start of your appointment. If you are 10 minutes late, you will need to reschedule and will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations and rescheduling must be made at least 24 hours before your appointment; changes made less than 24 hours in advance automatically incur a $50 fee. If you arrive to take a written or driving exam without a Washington ID or driver license number, it will be counted as a no-show and you will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. Private driving lessons must be canceled or rescheduled at least 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund or credit — cancellations do not result in an automatic refund. No refund will be issued for unused bundled packages (for example, if you purchase 2 exams for $50 and pass the first time, the second exam is not refunded). Please email us at contact@northwestdrivingacademy.com with any questions.
No. Cancellations made after the start date of the Teen Driving or Adult Driving course are not eligible for a refund. Refund requests must comply with the terms of our policy and be submitted in writing to contact@northwestdrivingacademy.com. We reserve the right to modify this policy at any time without prior notice.
Washington State law sets strict time requirements for completing a traffic safety program, and students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction. No more than 3 missed classes are permitted. Any missed classroom session must be fully made up using North West Driving Academy's approved make-up curriculum policy.
Bring your valid learner's permit or driver's license — you must have physical possession of it for every behind-the-wheel lesson, and arriving without it means the lesson is canceled and a $50 late fee applies. Wear closed-toe shoes with flat soles, such as sneakers; flip-flops, sandals, slides, and high heels are not permitted for safety reasons. Bring your glasses or contact lenses if your permit requires corrective eyewear, and your signed policy agreement if you haven't already completed it online.
To get a license as a teen (ages 15–17) in Washington, you progress through a structured system managed by the Department of Licensing (DOL): (1) Get an instruction permit — you can apply starting at age 15 (or 15½ if you aren't taking a driver training course right away); pre-apply online with the DOL to get a WDL number, and if you're taking a driver's ed course you can apply for the permit up to 10 days before your course starts ($35 fee). (2) Complete a state-approved course of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, and pass the written and driving tests. (3) Log at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving (10 at night) with a driver who's held a valid license for 5+ years. (4) Be at least 16, have held your permit at least 6 months, and have a clean record. (5) Apply for your intermediate license online or at a DOL office with a parent or guardian.
For anyone under 18 years old, your license starts as an Intermediate License with safety guardrails for the first year: for the first 6 months you cannot carry passengers under 20 except immediate family; for the next 6 months you're limited to 3 passengers under 20 years of age who aren't immediate family; you cannot drive between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM unless accompanied by a licensed driver at least 25 years old; and you cannot use any wireless device while driving (even hands-free) except to call 911.
